A SC prisons spokesman says 7 inmates are dead and 17 others required outside medical attention after hours of fighting inside a maximum security prison.

In a statement, SCDC Police Services and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said they will be investigating the incident.

The prison is located in the Town of Bishopville in Lee County, and is a Level 3 facility, meaning it houses some of the most violent offenders in the SC prison system.

In March, inmates at the prison held an officer hostage after taking control of a dorm room, The State reported. The inmates held the officer for about 25 minutes before it was secured by law enforcement.

Another inmate was killed during a fight at the facility in February, with two officers stabbed during a fight that broke out in Lee Correctional in 2015.
