Perhaps Linden's experience with inclement weather in MI helped give her a leg up with the rain, wind and cold in Boston Monday.

Depsite being the first American woman to take out the historic marathon since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach in 1985, Linden's winning time was the slowest in 40 years. The icy and rainy conditions on the Boston streets are to blame for that. Running through bad conditions, viewers were cheering Linden on across the country and took to social media to show their support and jubilation. She is the first American woman to win the race since 1985.

The race was ultimately won by Desi Linden, with an unofficial time of 2:39:54 - more than 10 minutes off her personal record, notes Time Magazine. "And then I looked back and I was in third (place) and I thought 'We'll I probably shouldn't drop out (now),'" Linden said to laughter at the post-race press conference. That was more than four minutes better than second-place finisher Sarah Sellers, but the slowest time for a women's victor in Boston since 1978.

On the fifth anniversary of the finish line explosions that killed three and wounded hundreds more, Linden and Kawauchi led a field of 30,000 runners through a drenching rain, temperatures in the mid-30s and gusts of up to 32 miles per hour on the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton.

Meanwhile, Yuki Kawauchi became the first Japanese man in 31 years to win the Boston Marathon on Monday with his fourth marathon triumph of the year.

At the end of the day, American men managed to snatch six of the Top 10 positions, with Andrew Bumbalough (2:19:52) coming in fifth, Scott Smith (2:21:47) finishing sixth, Elkanah Kibet (2:23:37) ranking eighth, and Daniel Vassallo (2:27:50) finishing last in the Top 10.

Before ending the 33-year stretch of foreign-born winners, Linden ran with elite runner Shalane Flanagan, who made a detour to use the bathroom during the race.

The eventual marathon victor slowed the pace right down, losing a couple of hundred metres, to rejoin her good friend, before encouraging and supporting her push to get back to the lead pack.
