Winning awards is nothing new to Kendrick Lamar.

The public service prize was the sixth time The Times has received the prestigious award in the more than century-long history of the Pulitzers.

Lamar, 30, won the Pulitzer Prize for music, making it the first non-jazz or classical work to take the honor.

"We are very proud of this selection", Dana Canedy, administrator of the Pulitzer Prize told reporters after the victor was announced.

The Pulitzer board rarely awards mainstream music, previous year giving the prize to the experimental opera composer Du Yun.

The awards recognize "the importance of a strong vibrant independent press", new Pulitzers administrator Dana Canedy said at a recent reception.

DAMN. itself is - particularly when considered next to the looser, jazz-rooted musicality of Lamar's album To Pimp A Butterfly from 2015 - a thoroughly modern document of hip-hop's present and near future, in both sound and narrative scope.

Established in 1917 by provisions in the will of the Hungarian-born American Joseph Pulitzer who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, it is administered by Columbia University in New York City yearly.

The New York Times staff also jointly won an award in the National Reporting category, along with the Washington Post staff.

The Pulitzers, American journalism's most prestigious awards, reflected a year of unrelenting news and unprecedented challenges for USA media, as Trump repeatedly branded reporting "fake news" and called journalists "the enemy of the people".
