Sabrina wrote a letter to the welfare office of Central Jail, Tihar, where Sharma is behind bars serving time for murdering Jessica Lall. Sharma, the 41-year-old accused, was moved to an open jail nearly 3 months ago owing to his good conduct in prison. In response, she wrote that she didn't need any financial assistance and the money should be given to others. The 41-year-old sentenced to a life term is allowed to leave his quarters in Delhi's Tihar Jail every day for work and return in the evening. Last October, he was admitted to an open jail allegedly after reviewing his conduct and work, which included running an NGO that has helped in "education of 700 children of jail inmates" and "post-release rehabilitation of inmates". Over the years, jail superintendents gave him "special remission on 11 occasions". "I've been fighting for this since 1999".

However, legal experts say that forgiveness or no objection by the victims' family members is not a factor to be considered in commutation of a sentence.
