More Than 200 Million Eggs Are Being Recalled in Nine States Amid Salmonella Fears

Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia received eggs through retail stores and restaurants, the statement said.

The illnesses were reported in states on the U.S. East Coast, leading the FDA to conduct extensive interviews.

The egg cartons affected by the recall should be labeled with the plant number P-1065, with packing dates ranging from 011 through 102.

Salmonella is particularly harmful to the elderly and young children, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. "The Hyde County farm has never before experienced a recall or serious safety violation", the company said in response to the recall, adding that everything "was conducted in full cooperation with the FDA".

In a Saturday update, the FDA reports it linked the contamination to Rose Acre Farms' Hyde County, North Carolina-based farm. The step was taken after 22 reported cases of salmonella infections were reported.

Over 200 million eggs are part of the voluntary recall because they might be contaminated with salmonella.

Meanwhile, the FDA has reportedly urged consumers to check their purchases and avoid eating eggs that might be contaminated.

They were sold under the brands Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Coburn Farms, Sunshine Farms, Glenview, Great Value as well as at Walmart and Food Lion stores. It's the largest egg recall in the USA since 2010.

"Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them", FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said Sunday in a Twitter message.
