Comey's book, A Higher Loyalty, will be released on Tuesday and in it, he calls the president "unethical, and untethered to truth and institutional values".

Comey said he does not know "what's behind" Trump's reluctance to criticise Russian President Vladimir Putin in public. He believes Americans are "duty bound" to "go to the voting booth and vote their values".

Mr Comey has kept quiet about his time under Mr Trump for almost a year, with the interview and his new tell-all book, A Higher Loyalty, breaking the silence. She also took issue with some of Comey's personal commentary in the book, saying it was "no way to comport oneself after you're trying to prove that you have this quote, 'higher loyalty'". The rant was five tweets and spanned slightly longer than an hour.

Comey blasted Trump as unfit for the office in the ABC interview.

"The big questions in Comey's badly reviewed book aren't answered like, how come he gave up Classified Information (jail), why did he lie to Congress (jail), why did the DNC refuse to give Server to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (why didn't they TAKE it), why the phony memos, McCabe's $700,000 & more?" tweeted Trump. The firing ultimately led to the appointment of Robert Mueller to direct a special counsel inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election and potential collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. After Clinton's loss, many Democrats blamed Comey, and Clinton herself has said it hurt her election prospects.

"It would depend and- and I'm just a witness in this case, not the investigator or prosecutor, it would depend upon other things that reflected on his intent", Comey tells Stephanopoulos. I can not say that (Trump is not subject to Russian blackmail).

Trump has slammed the dossier as fake and a disgrace.

And Comey said the president may have obstructed justice when he asked him to drop an investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn. "He is morally unfit.", Comey said, noting that Trump talks about women "like pieces of meat". "No FBI director has ever been fired as he was investigating a president", Stephanopoulos told CNNMoney.

Comey's televised remarks, coupled with the release of his forthcoming book, offer his version of events surrounding his firing and the investigations into Russian election meddling and Hillary Clinton's email practices. He called Comey "slippery" and again described him as a "slime ball".

Trump already attacked Comey on Friday, calling him "a proven LEAKER & LIAR" who should be prosecuted for leaking classified information. Trump said in one of a series of tweets fired off Sunday before the interview.

The group, which has been working with United Nations Department of Safety and Security, will continue the fact-finding mission. "It is not about regime change", May said in statement made from her country residence at Chequers just minutes after U.S.

In his tweet, Trump says: "Unbelievably, James Comey states that Polls, where Crooked Hillary was leading, were a factor in the handling (stupidly) of the Clinton Email probe".

The President rubbished the claim on Twitter, calling it another of his many lies. But instead, what I'm talking about is that leadership culture constantly comes back to me when I think about my experience with the Trump administration.

Comey said he did not believe the news at first because he thought it was a trick.

That argument was startling given that Comey's handling of the email investigation, including his disclosure shortly before the election that the FBI had reopened its probe, enraged Democrats.

Comey said he grew more wary when the chyron eventually changed to reflect that he had been fired.
