President Donald Trump dismissed former FBI Director James Comey's attacks on Monday by claiming Comey and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe had "committed many crimes!"

Comey's comments in an ABC News interview that aired Sunday were nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president and further erode a relationship marked by open hostility and name-calling.

In his five-hour interview with ABCs chief anchor, George Stephanopoulos, on the program 20/20, Comey said the president "treats women like theyre pieces of meat", and "lies constantly about matters big and small".

The White House says it is continuing to assess intelligence and talk to its allies on how to respond. He said: "We're having a number of meetings today, we'll see what happens".

The ex-FBI chief's comments in an ABC News interview are nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president. "That's up from 41 percent last June following Comey's admission under oath to a US Senate committee that he leaked memos of his private meetings with [President Donald] Trump as Federal Bureau of Investigation director to The New York Times through a friend", a press release summarizing the poll said. "Values matter", Comey said.

Trump has said repeatedly that Comey is a liar. "And the question is, how much stain is too much stain and how much stain eventually makes you unable to accomplish your goal of protecting the country and serving the country?"

Mr Comey added that that there is "some evidence of obstruction of justice" in the president's actions, and that Mr Trump is "morally unfit" for office.

The FBI director, who until his sacking last May led an investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, acknowledged that it was "stunning" to think that Russian Federation could hold damaging information about an American president.

"This is a man who spent no time with the president or the president-elect", Lewandowski said during an interview on FOX Business' "Kennedy".
