Ant McPartlin pleads guilty to drink driving

A vehicle crash was caught live on television as a BBC crew reported from outside Ant McPartlin's court hearing into his drink-drive collision.

Drink driving laws, and legal alcohol limits, have been in place for a number of years - longer than you might think.

"I just want to say that I'm truly sorry", he said outside Wimbledon Magistrates Court.

The 2014 law on drink driving states that if you have more than 35 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath (the equivalent of 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood) and are caught driving a auto, you are breaking the law.

His ban can be reduced to 15 months if he attends a driving awareness course.

The legal limit in the United Kingdom is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

McPartlin, who lives in Chiswick, west London, was arrested at around 4pm on March 18 after a failing a roadside breathalyser test following a collision between the Mini he was driving and two other cars.

In a letter read out in court, Ant said he is "ashamed and mortified" and "accepts full responsibility".

The court also heard McPartlin earns around £130,000 a week. He said he let himself "and so many others down".

Ant was previously scheduled to appear in court earlier this month, however an adjournment was agreed on after the presenter had recently entered rehab.

At the time a statement from McPartlin's publicist added: "Ant has chose to go back into treatment and step down from his current TV commitments".

Ant has stepped away from all of his television roles since the accident in March, however, prerecorded episodes of Britain's Got Talent that Ant featured in will air as planned.
