Why Lewis Cook's England debut made his grandad £17000 richer

Grandfather of debutant England global Lewis Cook, Trevor Burlingham smiled to the bank Tuesday after a bet he placed four years ago yielded a whooping N8.7million about £17,000.

When the bet was placed, Cook was just 18-years-old and on the fringes of the Leeds United first-team squad.

Trevor Burlingham placed a bet at 33-1 in 2014, in his local William Hill shop in Tadcaster, that Cook would make his debut before reaching his 26th birthday, and the 21-year-old came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Italy at Wembley on Tuesday.

The airport confirmed the incident in a Twitter post at 16:40pm (UK GMT), adding it was investigating "as a matter of urgency". At 17:12 BST, the airport tweeted: "The fire has since been put out and we're working on returning to normal operations".

But after coming on as a 71st minute substitute to replace Jesse Lingard at the same stadium, Cook's grandfather pocketed the mammoth sum.

Sensing an opportunity, Burlingham placed a £500 bet on his grandson picking up an global cap with England before the age of 26 at odds of 33/1.

Cook transferred to Bournemouth when he was a late teen in 2016, and his performances at the Premier League club caught the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate, who recruited the player to the national squad for Tuesday's game against Italy.
