Don’t blame guns for mass shootings

However, the team did say because their study was based exclusively on medical records, the relationship between conference attendance and gun injuries isn't necessarily concrete.

When a state hosted a convention, and presumably a higher percentage of local gun enthusiasts attended, gun-related injuries in that state fell 50 percent, said Dr. Anupam Jena, the study's senior author and an associate professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School. They found gun injuries dropped more than 20 percent across the entire US during those meetings. And opponents of new gun regulation contend injuries occur only among inexperienced users. According to a study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more than 65,000 intentional shootings in the United States in 2014, and 16,000 per accident.

The National Rifle Association has had a strong and loyal following for many years, but the recent massacre of 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Fla., may erode some of that once-invincible underpinning.

The researchers compared two data: the number of injuries that occurred during the days of the week when the NRA conventions were held, and the number of injuries that occurred on the same days of the week, but three weeks before or after the conventions. Yet injury rates were, on average, 20 percent lower on meeting days.

The decrease, the researchers said, is likely fueled by the brief period of gun abstinence during such conventions-a possibility that warrants further exploration and analysis.

In their analysis, the researchers examined almost 76 million medical insurance claims for emergency department visits and hospitalizations related to firearm injuries between 2007 and 2015.

High Wind Watch In Effect Until Saturday Morning
The strongest winds are expected late Friday morning through Friday evening, with winds gradually diminishing late Friday . On Thursday the National Weather Service expects snow before 10 a.m. turning to rain with a high near 40 degrees.

Both UPS and the U.S. Postal Service are listed as shippers for the NRA online store, which "includes accessories such as ball caps, T-shirts, holsters and hunting and sporting goods merchandise", UPS added.

Gun injuries nationally have declined by 20% during the convention in previous years, according to the study.

The answer may lie in the fact that NRA members carry, handle and use their guns more frequently than others. They support the 2nd Amendment for nearly all gun owners and sportsmen, but say that we need some checks in place to prevent mass shootings and mentally ill gun buyers. "There are probably many people who own guns who don't use them at all or do very infrequently". But this difference is not trivial, he says, considering only about 80,000 Americans out of a gun-owning population of tens of millions attend each meeting. First, injury rates on convention days dropped among men not women, consistent with the 85 percent of NRA meeting attendees who were male in 2017.
