San Diego area ICE arrests of noncriminal immigrants led nation from October to December

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman said he resigned after the Trump administration made false statements about a California mayor who warned immigrants about an impending arrest operation.

Former ICE spokesman James Schwab pointed to statements made by Acting ICE Director Tom Homan and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who have stated that Schaaf's warning February 24 about an ICE raid in Northern California resulted in several hundred undocumented immigrants from eluding arrest, according to multiple media outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle, KTVU and CNN. It's a false statement because we never pick up 100 percent of our targets.

"I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts", Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle.

"I asked them to change the information", he said.

Schwab told the newspaper he tried to get ICE to correct the figures quoted by Sessions and others, but was instead asked to deflect reporters' questions. "Then I took some time and I quit", Schwab said.

Schwab, however, told the Chronicle that those statements were falsehoods, and led to his resignation.

"Even one criminal alien on the street can put public safety at risk and as Director Homan stated, while we can't put a number on how many targets avoided arrest due to the mayor's warning, it clearly had an impact", Johnson wrote.

An ICE spokeswoman said that the agency disagrees with Schwab on the issue.

San Francisco Division ICE spokesman James Schwab chose to leave because he felt Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Acting ICE Director Tom Homan had mischaracterized the circumstances of illegal immigrants in Oakland, Calif., reports CNN.

In his attack on Schaaf, Trump said 85 percent of the targeted immigrants had criminal records. What she did is incredible and very unsafe from the standpoint of ICE and border patrol. And she has come to the realization that too many Californians haven't yet reached: ICE is not a federal law enforcement agency. "So we are looking at that situation very carefully".

Trump called what Schaaf did "a disgrace", saying her warning was the sole reason that hundreds of people escaped arrest.

"I didn't feel like fabricating the truth to defend ourselves against [Schaaf's] actions was the way to go about it", Schwab said.

Last week, Sessions called out Schaaf, saying, "Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue with more difficulty in more risky situations, all because of one mayor's irresponsible action".

"I commend Mr. Schwab for speaking the truth while under intense pressure to lie", she said in a statement to The Post.

And just last week, in Sacramento, Sessions said, "Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue with more difficulty in more unsafe situations, all because of one mayor's irresponsible action".

The most recent raid in the Bay area resulted in ICE arresting four people who had been previously arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, five people convicted of carrying concealed weapons, four people who were arrested for cruelty toward a child, two who were arrested for cruelty toward their wives, six people convicted of domestic violence, one person who had been convicted of drug trafficking, and one person who was convicted for lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, Homan said.

Pelosi has repeatedly called Trump's enforcement efforts "cowardly", and blamed ICE for terrorizing immigrant communities, however, Homan said agents are just protecting Americans.
