Channelview Independent School District, which is located east of Houston, has confirmed band students from Channelview High School were on the bus to Houston after a spring break trip.

A passenger bus crashed Tuesday morning on eastbound Interstate 10 at mile marker 57 near the Alabama/Florida line.

Several people were injured and taken to area hospitals, some by air ambulance.

Baldwin County (Ala.) Sheriff Hoss Mack said one person is in critical condition and five are in serious condition after the bus carrying high school students from Houston fell off Interstate 10.

Mack said the bus went about 50 feet down into the ravine.

A call center was established at 251-972-6807 for family members looking for their relatives who were aboard the bus, authorities said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it will send six investigators to investigate the crash.

Officials said the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency facility in Robertsdale, Alabama, would be used as a staging area to reunite non-injured passengers with families.

Mack said it was expected I-10 would remain shut down at least until noon.
