World War 2 bomb recovered from Thames, London City Airport shut

London City Airport has been closed after waterfront workers unearthed the device in the nearby river Thames.

Some roads near to the airport have also been closed. Royal Navy specialists established an exclusion zone of more than 200 meters (650 feet) to handle the situation, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

London City Airport closed and carriers including British Airways and CityJet cancelled flights after the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb.

There will be disruption to inbound and outbound flights during the operation, the Metropolitan Police said.

The ordnance had been discovered as part of pre-planned work that was taking place at the airport.

Royal Navy bomb disposal teams worked through the night to try and remove the device.
