Kottayam: A foreigner has accused a Catholic priest in Kerala of raping her after befriending her on Facebook, police said on Thursday.

Catholic priest Thomas Thanninilkkum Thadathil, 35, was the vicar of St Mathew's Church at Kallara in Kottayam, and has been on the run after the 42-year-old woman filed a police complaint.

A clergy man, who allegedly molested a foreign woman after acquainting her through Facebook, surrendered before the police on Friday.

Pala diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church dismissed Thomas from pastoral service and "all stages of priesthood" following the incident. As the complaint was registered as a case, the priest fled the scene. The woman came back with her friend on February 8.
