White House encourages Jim Renacci to run for Senate, decision expected soon

Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel is being eyed by Republicans as a possible candidate for the U.S. Senate according to a report in the Washington Examiner.

In a letter today to supporters, Renacci said he was asked to a meeting at the White House - it occurred Wednesday - "at which I was asked to help protect the future of President [Donald] Trump's agenda by entering Ohio's 2018 race for the United States Senate".

Renacci, a Republican from Wadsworth running for governor, has been one of the most discussed names for the Senate race after Republican Treasurer Josh Mandel announced he was dropping out last Friday, shocking OH political observers. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and will announce his candidacy on Thursday.

Conservative leaders immediately started encouraging Renacci to get into the Senate race, but the four-term congressman said he'd consider it only if Trump asked him.

"My goal is to be the governor of the state of Ohio", Renacci said Monday on the "Wills and Snyder Show" on WTAM radio in Cleveland. "And I want them to know I'm serious", he said last week, according to the Dayton Daily News. The businessman and former Wadsworth mayor earlier said he'd make that move if encouraged to by President Donald Trump, who carried the swing state in 2016.

"It's not that the state's not important but without straightening out this country we're going to have some serious issues", Renacci said of the message from the White House.

Renacci, who has represented OH in Congress since 2011, would have the president's support in a state Trump won in 2016 by 8 percentage points.
