According to USA Today, Hosmer already has a seven-year offer from the Padres, which would make him the highest-paid player in franchise history.

The Royals are competing with the San Diego Padres, per the report, and might have to add a year or two to the deal to secure the left-handed bat.

Hosmer, a four-time Gold Glove Award victor, is coming off a 2017 campaign in which he earned a Silver Slugger Award, as well.

The calendar has flipped to 2018 and it appears the market for baseball's top free agents is finally starting to heat up.

The Kansas City Royals aren't giving up on all of their free agents just yet.

So, with two teams reportedly having offers on the table for Hosmer, which one is he signing with?

World Number One Dustin Johnson, a previous victor of the tournament, is one off the lead at 9-under after a second round 68. Johnson looked set to be in a share of the lead overnight when he moved top of the leaderboard with a birdie at the last.

Hosmer is young enough that he can sign with the Padres, endure a couple of losing seasons and still be a big part of the franchise's next winning team. Hosmer has also been known as a great clubhouse player as well, which why the potential move to re-sign him is so intriguing.

So as Moore arrived at the Winter Meetings last month in Orlando, he signalled the start of a long and thorough rebuild, stating: "We have to build our farm system at the level we had it in 2010; that is the focus of this organization as we sit here today". The club is seeking to trim payroll to close to $110 million or $115 million after carrying club-record payrolls in 2016 and 2017.

But, for teams like the Royals and Padres who are rebuilding, then this gaudy contract is not worth throwing Hosmer's way.
