Katie Couric Slams Today for Matt Lauer's 'Completely Unacceptable' Workplace Harassment

She departed NBC in 2006 to anchor the "CBS Evening News" and has been criticized for her silence in the more than a month since Lauer was sacked. The announcement was made by Savannah Guthrie at the beginning of the morning broadcast on November 29, 2017.

"The whole thing has been very painful for me", Couric told People of Lauer's behavior. "The accounts I have read and heard are upsetting, debilitating and disorienting plus it's really completely improper that any female in the Now show experienced this sort of treatment method".

She also maintains that she was completely unaware of any incidents taking place during her time on the show, from 1991 to 2006.

"I had no idea this was going on during my tenure or after I left", she said.

In an interview with "People" magazine, Couric calls the accounts of Lauer's misconduct "disturbing", but says she learned about them only through the media.

"I think I speak for many of my former colleagues when I say this was not the Matt we knew", Couric told People. It is now my full-time job The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws.

He added that he never said anything derogatory about Haitians. "There is no other word you can use but "racist". White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday "There has not been a deal reached yet".

Couric said that she and Lauer had a "brother-sister" relationship and that he treated her with respect.

Lauer was sacked in November over the allegations of multiple women, one of whom claimed he sexually assaulted her while they worked on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

"It's been really crushing", Couric said of the allegations against Lauer.

"I mean, we communicate, and listen, it's been a very trying situation in all corners of the world, and all kinds of industries, and you know, people have to move forward", she said. As I am writing this, I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.
