Akayed Ullah indicted for NY explosion

"In selecting this time and place, Ullah's alleged goal in the Port Authority bombing was painfully clear: to inflict as much damage as possible, and to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers in the name of ISIS", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said when announcing the indictment.

The indictment comes almost a month after Ullah, 27, allegedly set off a pipe bomb in a subway passageway inside the Port Authority bus terminal during morning rush hour on December 11.

The accused Port Authority bomber told a Manhattan federal judge Thursday that he was pleading not guilty in the case - at least for now.

A Bangladeshi immigrant has been indicted on terrorism charges in the U.S. for last months botched bombing in a New York City subway station.

Asked what advice she would give a political outsider looking to run for president, press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to engage.

Ullah was seriously burned and five bystanders received minor injuries December 11 when an explosive device he wore detonated.

Federal authorities on Wednesday released a six-count indictment charging Ullah with providing material support to the Islamic State, use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing a public transport system, committing a terrorist attack against a mass transport system, destruction of public property with an explosive and using a destructive device in a crime of violence.

Three commuters near Ullah during the incident at morning rush hour suffered headaches and ringing ears, in what authorities quickly pronounced a terrorist attack. He was arrested soon after the pipe bomb failed to fully explode, though he was initially hospitalized after suffering burns.

Addressing reporters today, Ullah's attorney Amy Gallicchio emphasized the importance of due process.

I wouldn't rule it out, but I don't see him beating down their door saying "it's now or never" because I don't think it is. It happened to Liverpool [with Coutinho].

Assistant U.S. Attorney George Turner said evidence Ullah will face at a trial likely to last only a week or two includes surveillance video of him detonating the bomb, along with photographs of bomb components on him and elsewhere.

CNN cited a law enforcement official as saying that Ullah said he carried out the attempted attack because of "recent Israeli actions in Gaza".

He will be arraigned before Judge Sullivan.

That's important because cigarette smoking rates have gone down in teens, which could be seen as a win by health advocates. They added that the study has direct implications for regulatory policy aimed at preventing youth smoking.
