Texas police officer fatally shot in 'ambush-style' attack

Police have revealed the identity of an officer shot and killed while serving a warrant in Central Texas.

The police officer was serving a warrant when he was shot and killed in Texas Monday, authorities said.


The officer, who was wearing body armor at the time of the shooting, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. Stapp said that police officers pulled Copeland out of the area.

Police are not identifying the suspect until he can be taken before a judge and formally charged, Stapp said.

For people who live in the El Camino Real subdivision in San Marcos, Monday afternoon was met with a slew of of sirens and crime scene tape. A news release from the city says a suspect is in custody and is being treated for a gunshot wound after a standoff with SWAT members from the San Marcos police and Hays County Sheriff's Office.

According to arrest warrants, Copeland went to the house of 51-year-old Stewart Thomas Mettz to serve a domestic violence warrant when he was shot several times.

One police officers took him to the Central Texas Medical Center in a police vehicle where the doctors pronounced him dead at 3:55 p.m.

Copeland is the sixth law enforcement officer to die from gunfire in Texas this year, according to statistics from the Officer Down Memorial Page. "Officers around our state courageously serve and deserve our utmost honor and respect, especially during this time", he said.

City officials said Copeland was the first San Marcos police officer to be killed in the line of duty.

"Ken's a hero. Today was his day off".

Gov. Greg Abbott issued his condolences to the slain cop's family and promised the shooter will receive "swift justice". Copeland leaves behind a wife and four children. "They are a part of our family as well and they did a great job".

"His picture is hanging in different parts of this police department because everybody here loved him", he added.

The fallen officer had been working on his day off, Strapp said.
